DataMatrix code (2D code) - explanation and application
It is possible to significantly increase data storage density with the two-dimensional DataMatrix code (2D code)

in comparison to one-dimensional bar codes (1D code)
![]()
over the same surface area.
The DataMatrix code is a method of encoding data in a highly compact form in a square or rectangular pattern of cells. The cells are adjoining black or white square modules, or alternatively round dots with gaps in-between.
The DataMatrix code also offers an error correction facility (Reed-Solomon) and therefore supplants the humble bar code in many applications. Examples include the electronic postage stamp (STAMPIT), the 2D Pharmacode, and the marking of parts in the aerospace industry and in medical technology.
The character recognition quality is greatly enhanced and therewith also e.g. the ability to transfer the contents of a document.
These advantages can also be exploited in documentation applications.
IMR GmbH has specialised in this field.
